Noah’s Train Theme Birthday Party

Friday was Noah’s 3rd birthday and this year we celebrated the special day with a little family party at home.  Noah and I poured over our copy of Women’s Weekly Kids Parties and various internet sites to come up with a theme.  I tried to talk him into “dinosaurs”, but he was adamant it had to be a train party.  There’s just no swaying a 3 year old when it comes to Thomas and Friends.

I chose the colour scheme based on Noah’s favourite characters, or in our house alter-ego’s: Thomas (of course) aka Noah, and Percy aka Sam.  Blue, green and white, with a little orange (Billy) and purple (Rosie) to brighten things up.  I trust some of you Mum’s out there will know who I’m yabbering on about.

The centerpiece was the cake.  Stacked layers of vanilla butter cake, with butter cream icing and coconut.  The toppers were made from a brilliant tutorial over at Cake Journal (which happened to match out colour scheme perfectly).  Cake Journal is a favourite site of mine, full of great ideas and inspiration.  They were really easy to make, and the tutorial is extremely easy to follow.  I love the little details.  We nearly had a little upset, when Noah decided to scale the kitchen bench and claim them (pre-party) for his train set, and a little taste test.  Needless to say Mum was not impressed, thankfully they were easy to repair.

The funniest moment of the day was also related to the cake.  We sang happy birthday and I showed Noah how to blow out the candles, which took a bit of practice to find the right amount of breath.  Once he got it, he was off and with all the candles blown out, he immediately dived face first into the side of the cake, announcing with a big icing-covered grin: “My Cake! It’s yummy!”

It was a fun day all round, and I’m looking forward to Sam’s very first birthday in December.  I’ll be back during this week with some recipe’s and other party details.  See you soon!

Abby, what gorgeous photos!! It looks like pictures from a magazine. I’m totally inspired. I spotted your comments on the “Homely One” blog. I like her blog, so I left her a comment and she left me comments! I love meeting people through blogs. How world has changed! Anyways, your cake is fantastic and I can’t believe you made it! How funny Noah decided to dive into the side of the cake! Hilarious. I would take it as a compliment.

How gorgeous your party is! I love that you’ve made it as “un-Thomas” as you have given the theme. I am not the hugest Thomas fan but I think he’s nigh on impossible to avoid. My Bebito had his birthday party too over the weekend – he’s a year younger than your Noah and I posted about our Oliver Jeffers’ books theme too.

Discovered your site a couple of weeks ago through kiwimummyblogs. Beautifully decorated and thought out party theme for wee Noah (I have a Noah too – he’s just turned four!). That cake looked amazing, and I’d have happily buried my face in it too!
